Exploratory Essay Example - How to Research Ideas For Your Paper

Exploratory Essay Example - How to Research Ideas For Your PaperAn exploratory essay example is a way to understand how you might structure your own essay and still come up with effective ideas for your essay. The topic of your essay could be many things; perhaps it would be about an upcoming event, or an upcoming sporting event, or maybe something just at random. This is the perfect format for you if you are looking for an easy way to research ideas. If you have a specific idea in mind, you can use this format to know how to apply it and show what you have learned. The most common word that you will use in this format is that of 'explore'. It does not matter how you approach this type of essay; whether you write it out yourself, or you write it and then give it to a person to proofread it for you. In either case, the purpose of the exploration is to find out as much as you can about the topic. You need to leave yourself enough room so that you can branch out of the topic and explore more. The exploratory essay example is very similar to the think tank essay idea in the sense that you must reach out and question everything that you think. But, in this example, you have to research and see if the idea has been taken. Once you have found out if it has been, you can begin to put together your proposal for the topic. In this way, you already have a starting point to begin your essay. If you are going to go this route, you need to start with a topic that you have already researched thoroughly, and that has already been thought of, rather than just randomly jumping into an area. Before you can even begin your proposal, you need to make sure that your paper is right for this sort of writing, and your topic is right for this type of essay. A good rule of thumb is to look at your ideas as though you were the writer. Think of what information you want to include and write it down. What you write will likely be personal, and while it may be published, you must make sure that the words come from you. The person that you are writing to will read your words, and they are not going to remember just how it was written, so make sure that it comes from your own unique perspective. This is the best way to make sure that you keep to the topic of your paper and keep your voice in control. Also, you will want to find out as much as you can about the subject, so you may need to see it to believe it. You also want to see just how confident you are with the information that you have. You need to feel it, if it is correct, then your writing will reflect that as well.Remember, these types of essays are meant to show off your ability, and they are also meant to impress the person who is reading them. Just as with any other writing, it needs to be well constructed and well researched, so make sure that you do not take shortcuts. It is not always necessary to spend hours doing research for every idea that you present. Sometimes, all you need is one page to convince the re ader of the ideas that you present. So, rather than go over five or six pages, instead of trying to use the many ideas that you come up with, try writing an exploratory essay in one or two pages.Exploring a topic will help you to become more aware of all of the various ideas that you can include in your paper. Because you are exploring, it will give you an opportunity to think about the topics that you are concerned with. You will also be able to see more ways of telling a story or presenting a thesis. While you might not know what this is yet, by writing it out, you will gain more confidence and skills for more productive writing.

Lessons Learned on Becoming a Better Person - 1106 Words

The authors of the essays we read this semester, all had the same idea of becoming a better person. All of them wanted us to stand up for ourselves and take control of our lives. Four essays stood out to me this semester that I believe really bring this idea to life. â€Å"What Really Scares Us† tell us how to take control of our life with numbers and facts. â€Å"Aria† tell us how to become a more competent person with making sacrifices. â€Å"Shooting an Elephant† tells us to stand for ourselves by telling a story of a man being forced by others. Finally, â€Å"Learning to Read and Write† contains all these elements as a slave learns to read. David Ropeik had a bold approach to tell his readers to take control of their lives and stop being afraid. In†¦show more content†¦Orwell is looking for accuses and avoids taking responsibility because he feels bad that he killed the animal. â€Å"Shooting an Elephant† shows the readers how not to ac t. A stronger person would have gone with their initial intentions of not killing the elephant, instead of succumbing to the wishes of the crowd, just to give them what they want. â€Å"And if that happened it was quite probable that some of them would laugh. That would never do. There was only one alternative. I shoved the cartridges into the magazine and lay down on the road to get a better aim.† (Orwell 71). He killed the elephant for them. If he were able to stand up for himself, he would have kept his dignity and walked away. Finally, in Frederick Douglass’s essay, â€Å"Learning to Read and Write†, I believe this embodies the most effective lesson in how to stand up for yourself, be a competent person, and take control of your life. Douglass, being a slave, meant already at the start he had to overcome adversity in his life. â€Å"I often found myself regretting my own existence, and wishing myself dead.† (Douglass 354) Even with the mindset he was in, he was able to stand up against his oppressors by teaching himself to read and write. Race Essay Example For Students

Race Essay By: April E-mail: emailprotected FROM PREJUDICE TO DISCRIMINATION A prejudice is an unjustified negative attitude toward a group, a category of people, or a cultural practice. Prejudice against a group carries a strong emotional discomfort with, dislike of, or outright hatred of its members. Often it is based on a negative stereotype that resists rational argument. Some prejudices come from experience, such as unpleasant or baffling encounter with someone from another ethnic group. Many prejudices are passed along from parents to children, in messages that say We dont associate with people like that, sometimes without either generation having ever met the object of their dislike. Some come from the images that the media convey, for instance, of men and women, blacks and whites, young and old. Once people have formed attitudes in general, and prejudices in particular, they are reluctant to change their minds for several reasons: 1) The cognitive payoff, 2) The social payoff, 3) The economic payoff, 4) The psychological payoff. People cling to some attitudes like life preservers but they are persuaded to give up others. The more payoffs there off for maintaining an attitude, the more resistant it will be to change. The different casual connections between attitudes and behavior can be seen clearly in the case of prejudice. In some cases, the attitude (prejudice) leads to behavior (discrimination). Discrimination may be subtle, as when a person refuses to associate with targets of the prejudice. It may be accepted social practice, as when members of one group refuse to hire or promote people who are different from them. In extreme cases, it can take the form of efforts to control or exterminat Frasier 2 members of the group. In the United States, prejudice has led to the lynching of blacks, bombing of synagogues, the massacre of Native Americans, the illegal imprisonment of Japanese Americans during World War II, the harassment of homosexuals, and other violent acts against minority groups. But sometimes people who have prejudiced attitudes are prevented from discriminating because of the law, or social convention, or other interests. Even people with no prejudices may nevertheless discriminate in their behavior. Custom, role requirements, or even the law causes them to treat people in ways they would prefer not to. DIFFERENT FORMS OF DISCRIMINATION Throughout United States history many other groups have suffered racial and religious discrimination. Since Europeans first came to America, Native Americans have been forcibly deprived of their lands and denied civil rights. Congress enacts the Indian Civil Rights Act in 1968, and the Federal courts have entertained a number of suits designed to restore to Native American Tribes ancestral lands and hunting and fishing rights. Discrimination has taken many different forms. For many years Urban voters were denied equal representation in Congress and State Legislatures; the elderly have been faced with discrimination in employment and housing, despite federal and state laws designed to prevent such practices. Former prisoners and mental patients have suffered from legal disabilities after their terms of confinement ended. And some aliens have been denied equal employment opportunities. People with Physical disabilities have ensures discrimination in employment and access to Frasier 3 public facilities and transportation. The Americans with Disabilities act of 1990 addressed these problems on the national lever. Discrimination against Homosexuals A widespread form of discrimination exists against homosexuals, who historically endured prejudice because of social and sexual taboos. Few state or local laws exists to protect rights of lesbians and gay men against discrimination. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution does not protect private homosexual relations among consenting adults. This decision led to aggressive action by the gay community to counteract prejudice and to lobby for legal protections. In response, conservative groups in some states sought to ban local anti-discrimination laws that protected gay people. Supreme Court ruled that the states could not deny basic civil rights protections to homosexuals. Discrimination against Foreigners and Minorities Most nations practice discrimination against foreigners and disfavored minorities within their borders. It may be religious, such as Protestants against Roman Catholics or Muslims against Jews or Muslims against Jews. Racial as in the apartheid policy that was enforced in South Africa from 1948 t0 1992; or sexual discrimination, as the laws of each country should be the means of combating discrimination but often these efforts to combat discriminatory practices. International efforts to combat discrimination were minimal until the passage of the United Nations (UN) Chapter in 1945. Frasier 4 One of the chapters purposes is to encourage Respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as the race, sex, language, or religion. A broad statement of human rights is contained in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, passed by the UN General Assembly in 1948, but it does not have a binding effect on member states. Later, the General Assembly passed the Covenant on Civil and political rights, as well as specific conventions on the prevention and punishment of genocide and on the Elimination of all forms of racial discrimination. Although a majority of nations have signed the covenants, the U.S. has not yet done so. The major obstacle to international protection of human rights is the most nations will not accept any interference with their affairs, including questions of discrimination against their own citizens. To a modest degree these bodies such as the European Commission on Human Rights and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. Although many claim we live in an age of enlightenment, discrimination in the workplace remains prevalent. When employment decisions are based on an employees race, sex, religion, the impact is felt on many levels. Economically, qualified employees are denied decent jobs, advancement and the ability to maintain and pursue a quality discrimination degrades, abuses, belittles ad destroys ones self-esteem. Both federal and state laws decisions based on a persons sex, race, creed, religion, national origin, age and physical impairments. Moreover, laws prohibiting discrimination are not only concerned with the hiring and firing process. Disparate treatment of employees with respect to the terms and condition of their employment Frasier 5 is also forbidden. Harassment in the workplace based on the race or employees who are actually bound to eradicate hostile environments may not tolerate sex. Although there are numbers of federal laws which address equal employment opportunities, most employment discrimination cases are brought under the Federal Civil Rights Act of 1904. While the 1964 Act clearly prohibited workplace discrimination, it did not adequately address the needs of victims or the economic hurdles one faces in seeking redress for a violation of his or her rights. On November 21,1991, the President George Bush signed into law the Civil Rights Act of 1991. The 1991 Act had a drastic effect on employment discrimination cases. Several obstacles which victims faced in pursuing employment claims were removed. The Act better recognized the full extent of losses which a victim suffers and allowed for compensation or both the economic and emotional impact of discrimination. For a victim of discrimination there are four steps that are highly recommended to follow 1). Make it clear orally and /or in writing, to the discriminator that his/her conduct is unwelcome. 2). Report incidents of discrimination to your supervisor or the person designated to receive complaints. 3). Document each incident of discrimination. 4). There are time limits for pursing a claim of discrimination with both federal and state agencies and in court. A failure to commerce a charge of discrimination within the applicable time limit will, in most cases, bar the victims right to seek redress. .u87cf940a27c803ae5f63949ba9dbd057 , .u87cf940a27c803ae5f63949ba9dbd057 .postImageUrl , .u87cf940a27c803ae5f63949ba9dbd057 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u87cf940a27c803ae5f63949ba9dbd057 , .u87cf940a27c803ae5f63949ba9dbd057:hover , .u87cf940a27c803ae5f63949ba9dbd057:visited , .u87cf940a27c803ae5f63949ba9dbd057:active { border:0!important; } .u87cf940a27c803ae5f63949ba9dbd057 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u87cf940a27c803ae5f63949ba9dbd057 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u87cf940a27c803ae5f63949ba9dbd057:active , .u87cf940a27c803ae5f63949ba9dbd057:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u87cf940a27c803ae5f63949ba9dbd057 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u87cf940a27c803ae5f63949ba9dbd057 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u87cf940a27c803ae5f63949ba9dbd057 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u87cf940a27c803ae5f63949ba9dbd057 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u87cf940a27c803ae5f63949ba9dbd057:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u87cf940a27c803ae5f63949ba9dbd057 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u87cf940a27c803ae5f63949ba9dbd057 .u87cf940a27c803ae5f63949ba9dbd057-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u87cf940a27c803ae5f63949ba9dbd057:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The New Age After the 1500s Essay ECONOMIC DISCRIMINATION The effects of economic discrimination can be devastating for women. In 1996, women in the United States made seventy-five cents for every dollar that men earned. For the 46.3 million American men aged twenty-five to sixty-four years, the median income is $31,200. For the 35 million women in the same age group, median income is $23,000. Because of the great difference in women and mens wages, many women are condemned to poverty and are forced to accept welfare and its accompanying stigma. Wage differentials are especially important to single women. Single mothers who are usually responsible for supporting them head Twenty-three percent of all families. In 1993, 54.1 percent of these families made less than $15,000 a year; 19 percent made less than $5,000. Women face considerable barriers in their access to well paying, higher status jobs (Bergen, 1991). Although employment and pay discrimination is prohibited by Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the law did not end the pay discrepancy between men and women. Much of the earnings gap is the result of occupational differences, gender segregation, and womens tendency to interrupt their employment for family reasons and to take jobs that do not interfere extensively with their family lives. Earnings are about 30 to 50 percent higher in traditionally male occupations, such as truck driver or corporate executive, than in predominantly female or sexually integrated occupations, such as secretary or schoolteacher. The more an occupation is dominated by women, the less it pays. DISCRIMINATION APRIL S. FRASIER RACIAL AND CULTURAL MINORITY DR. WONG DECEMBER 9, 1999 Word Count: 1517

You could also use apostrophes for words like 'and.'If you find yourself typing instead of writing, you should try to write out what you want to say and then type it out. Typing will make it much easier to read because you will be thinking about what you are saying, instead of trying to remember what you are writing. The trick to this technique is to remember to type a letter of the alphabet every time that you use an 'I' or a 'j' or a 'K.' This is easy enough to remember and you will have far less mistakes when you are typing. If you find that you have run out of ideas or you think that you would like to write a wordier versions of your paper, try re-reading it.
